This\n   <strong>\n    affordable open source hardware and software robot\n   <\/strong>\n   was designed for education. Everything is arranged intelligently and the numerous sensors and actuators available make it a great choice. Its key feature is that it\u2019s\n   <strong>\n    extremely easy to use\n   <\/strong>\n   , just like the visual (Thymio VPL) and textual (Aseba Studio) programming software.\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <p>\n   It can be used in primary schools and through to university..\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <figure class=\"wp-block-image\">\n   <a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Inirobot-et-thymio-2-2.jpg\">\n    <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"320\" height=\"214\" alt=\"Realisation faite avec le module Inirobot et le robot mobile Thymio 2\" class=\"wp-image-1254\" src=\"http:\/\/www.generationrobots.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Inirobot-et-thymio-2-2.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.generationrobots.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Inirobot-et-thymio-2-2.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.generationrobots.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Inirobot-et-thymio-2-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/>\n   <\/a>\n  <\/figure>\n  \n  \n  <p class=\"has-text-align-center\">\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <p>\n   As for the \u00a0\u00bb\n   <strong>\n    Dessine-moi un robot\u00a0\u00bb\n   <\/strong>\n   site, I should point out that there are in fact three sites: the core\n   <a class=\"catalogue\" href=\"http:\/\/dm1r.fr\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"dessinemoiunrobot.fr\">\n    dessinemoiunrobot.fr\n   <\/a>\n   (or dm1r.fr) site, its associated forum\n   <a class=\"catalogue\" href=\"https:\/\/dm1r.inria.fr\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"dm1r.inria.fr\">\n    dm1r.inria.fr\n   <\/a>\n   and\n   <a class=\"catalogue\" href=\"https:\/\/dm1r.inria.fr\/c\/kits-pedagogiques\/inirobot\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"inirobot.fr\">\n    inirobot.fr\n   <\/a>\n   , which points to a part of the previous site dedicated to IniRobot.\n   <br\/>\n   These sites all fall under the Dessine-moi un robot banner and propose turnkey activities, reports, links and discussions between users. Their aim is to b\n   <strong>\n    e as useful as possible for those wanting to organise activities\n   <\/strong>\n   initiating people to robotics.\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <p>\n   The activities carried out as part of the\n   <a class=\"catalogue\" href=\"\/blog\/en\/inirobot-project-the-thymio-ii-robot-has-arrived-in-schools\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Inirobot Project: the Thymio II robot has arrived in schools\">\n    Inirobot project\n   <\/a>\n   are successful today because they are so simple.\n   <strong>\n    Carefully developed by a team of researchers and teachers and tested in a real-life context\n   <\/strong>\n   , to create an easy-to-use \u201cmissions book\u201d, they bring truly accessible projects to life. The\n   <a class=\"catalogue\" href=\"https:\/\/dm1r.inria.fr\/t\/inirobot-les-documents-a-telecharger\/141\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"IniRobot : les documents \u00e0 t\u00e9l\u00e9charger !\">\n    documents for download\n   <\/a>\n   contain proposals for activities, associated files and corrections, and all content is Creative Commons open source so it can be adapted by each user.\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <p>\n   The\n   <strong>\n    ready-to-use aspect\n   <\/strong>\n   is important for its distribution, because not everyone has the time to create their own robotics activities.\n   <br\/>\n   The only thing we ask for in exchange is some\n   <strong>\n    feedback on the dm1r.inria.fr forum\n   <\/strong>\n   , so the community as a whole can benefit from individual experiences.\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n  \n  \n  <p>\n   <em>\n    <strong>\n     G\u00e9n\u00e9ration Robots :\n    <\/strong>\n    This is all a far cry from the kind of technology classes given 15 to 20 years ago, and the government is showing its strong determination to place a special focus on digital technology and on innovative technological training in schools. How do you think technological studies will evolve in the future?\n   <\/em>\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n  \n  \n  <p>\n   <strong>\n    Didier Roy :\n   <\/strong>\n   And teaching in general! A more rewarding education for everyone, both children and adults, based not only on knowledge but also on creativity and initiative.\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <p>\n   And, why not, a more cross-disciplinary form of teaching,\n   <strong>\n    where groups sharing the same skills are formed in addition to those created by age group\n   <\/strong>\n   , taking people\u2019s differences into account to enrich the learning process, and using digital technologies to help customise training programs.\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n  \n  \n  <p>\n   <em>\n    <strong>\n     G\u00e9n\u00e9ration Robots :\n    <\/strong>\n    More and more people believe that democratising digital technology in schools could prevent pupils from dropping out. Why is this do you think?\n   <\/em>\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n  \n  \n  <p>\n   <strong>\n    Didier Roy :\n   <\/strong>\n   Let\u2019s say it could help prevent this, to be on the safe side.\n   <br\/>\n   Digital technology offers advantages because it can be used to differentiate training, through exercisers, learning games and educational support platforms, especially as today we know how to optimise and customise these tools using machine learning algorithms (take for example the\n   <a class=\"catalogue\" href=\"https:\/\/flowers.inria.fr\/research\/kidlearn\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"The Kidlearn Project\">\n    Kidlearn project\n   <\/a>\n   ,).\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <p>\n   It can also be used as a means to help visualise situations, simulate environments, find information and facilitate interaction.\n   <br\/>\n   <strong>\n    These two aspects \u2013 learning optimisation and personalisation \u2013\n   <\/strong>\n   make it a fundamental tool in the fight against academic failure and for equal opportunities.\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <p>\n   Digital tools are\n   <strong>\n    a natural progression of our technological society\n   <\/strong>\n   and as such have their rightful place in education, since they offer something more. Which does not mean, and I strongly believe this, that we need to throw away everything that already exists and works well.\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <p>\n   Let\u2019s take this opportunity to distinguish between two aspects of \u201cdigital technology\u201d, which is a catch-all used to describe anything we want. There are digital tools, like those I\u2019ve just mentioned, and digital sciences, which must be taught to make sure everyone understands today\u2019s world \u2013 not necessarily how their robotised washing machine works (!), but computer and robotics thinking, which is gradually redefining our society.\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n  \n  \n  <p>\n   <em>\n    <strong>\n     G\u00e9n\u00e9ration Robots :\n    <\/strong>\n    Poppy, the Flowers research team\u2019s latest project, is the first humanoid robot in the world to be both open source and 3D printed. How is this robot received in schools and research centres? How do you see Poppy\u2019s future in schools?\n   <\/em>\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n  \n  \n  <p>\n   <strong>\n    Didier Roy :\n   <\/strong>\n   We\u2019ve already touched on this subject. P\n   <strong>\n    oppy is a platform created for research, to help study development mechanisms in humans and by analogy in robots\n   <\/strong>\n   (the\n   <a class=\"catalogue\" href=\"https:\/\/flowers.inria.fr\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"INRIA Flowers Team\">\n    Flowers team\n   <\/a>\n   \u2019s field of research, social and developmental robotics). In this particular case, we are studying locomotion. Which is why Poppy walks like a child if held by the hand.\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <p>\n   It turns out that it\u2019s a perfect platform for education, due notably to the fact that it\u2019s open source. The main themes are mechatronics and informatics, but there are others too.\n   <strong>\n    Poppy is also used for artistic performances.\n   <\/strong>\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\">\n   <a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Poppy_humanoid_acrobat.jpg\">\n    <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" alt=\"Robot 3D Poppy humanoid acrobat\" class=\"wp-image-939\" src=\"http:\/\/www.generationrobots.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Poppy_humanoid_acrobat-225x300.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.generationrobots.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Poppy_humanoid_acrobat-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.generationrobots.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Poppy_humanoid_acrobat-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.generationrobots.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Poppy_humanoid_acrobat-624x832.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>\n   <\/a>\n  <\/figure>\n  \n  \n  <p>\n   <strong>\n    Its target audience is pupils reaching the end of secondary school and higher education students.\n   <\/strong>\n   Several universities and engineering schools are today buying Poppy kits or building their own Poppy robots themselves, sometimes only an arm or a bust, depending on their needs and budgets.\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <p>\n   <strong>\n    A community has formed and is gradually growing\n   <\/strong>\n   , ensuring the platform will evolve and be used in more different ways, for a wider range of experiences.\n   <br\/>\n   And don\u2019t forget the Poppy Mini, which costs less (15 times less expensive, around 500 euros) so it will have its own place in this market, less impressive than its big brother but much more affordable.\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n  \n  \n  <p>\n   <em>\n    <strong>\n     G\u00e9n\u00e9ration Robots :\n    <\/strong>\n    A final word?\n   <\/em>\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n  \n  \n  <p>\n   <strong>\n    Didier Roy :\n   <\/strong>\n   I find using research to create new tools for educating people about digital sciences extremely exciting.\n   <br\/>\n   By imagining uses conducive to learning, we\u2019re helping, albeit modestly, to\n   <strong>\n    prevent pupils from dropping out of school and equal opportunities\n   <\/strong>\n   . More and more researchers and teachers, interested in what digital sciences can do to help, are becoming involved in such activities. It\u2019s very encouraging.\n  <\/p>\n  \n  \n  <p>\n   I wouldn\u2019t dare go so far as to say we want to\n   <strong>\n    make the world a bit easier for everyone to understand\n   <\/strong>\n   , a little less unequal, because that sounds presumptuous, but there is some truth in that.\n  <\/p>\n  \n <\/body>\n<\/html>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here is\u00a0the second part of our interview with Didier Roy.
