This represented a first step during which Rethink Robotics redefined our working relationship with robots,\n <a href=\"\/blog\/en\/collaborative-robots-traditional-robots-5-key-differences\/\">\n taking them out of their cages to interact with humans\n <\/a>\n and more effectively help with dangerous and monotonous tasks.\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n With this new collaborative robot, Sawyer, they have broken another barrier and\n \n made it even easier for robots to be included in the work place\n <\/strong>\n .\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n \n Without further ado, here is a rundown of what this latest Rethink Robotics robot can actually do…\n <\/strong>\n <\/p>\n \n \n <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sawyer-baxter-how-are-they-different\">\n Sawyer, Baxter, how are they different?\n <\/h2>\n \n \n \n Sawyer is a powerful and efficient\n \n articulated arm\n <\/strong>\n designed for performing repetitive tasks requiring\n \n a high degree of precision\n <\/strong>\n and that are impractical to automate with your traditional industrial robot.\n <\/p>\n \n \n <figure class=\"wp-block-image\">\n <a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Sawyer-with-logos.jpg\">\n <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"540\" alt=\"Sawyer is a high-precision compliant arm\" class=\"wp-image-1820\" src=\"http:\/\/www.generationrobots.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Sawyer-with-logos.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.generationrobots.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Sawyer-with-logos.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.generationrobots.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Sawyer-with-logos-250x300.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/>\n <\/a>\n <\/figure>\n \n \n \n <\/p>\n \n \n \n Tasks can range from\n \n loading machines to checking and testing circuit boards\n <\/strong>\n . Sawyer will prove particularly agile on an electric component assembly line.\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n \n Weighing 19 kg\n <\/strong>\n , taking up\n \n very little floor space\n <\/strong>\n (similar to that taken up by a human) and with an arm offering\n \n 7 degrees of freedom (DOF)\n <\/strong>\n and\n \n a 1 metre reach\n <\/strong>\n , Sawyer can be installed in\n \n places inaccessible for Baxter\n <\/strong>\n .\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n This new collaborative robot is\n \n much more flexible and agile\n <\/strong>\n . \u201cThe arm can just snake right in there\u201d, into very narrow spaces, says Rodney Brooks, speaking of his new robot.\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n Sawyer also has a new embedded vision system, with:\n <\/p>\n \n \n <ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n \n <li>\n \n a camera in the head\n <\/strong>\n , allowing it to perform operations requiring a wide field of view; and\n <\/li>\n \n \n <li>\n \n a Cognex camera\n <\/strong>\n with a built-in light source\n \n mounted on the wrist\n <\/strong>\n for precision vision applications.\n <\/li>\n \n <\/ul>\n \n \n \n In the future, Sawyer will incorporate more advanced features associated with this Cognex camera, for example the ability\n \n to read barcodes or recognise objects\n <\/strong>\n .\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n These important differences with regard to Baxter mean Sawyer will have its own unique position in the market,\n \n meeting different needs\n <\/strong>\n .\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n \n \u00ab\u00a0With Baxter, we introduced the concept of robots and people working together on the plant floor,\u201d\n <\/em>\n says Rethink Robotics President and CEO Scot Eckert. *\u201cWith Sawyer, we have taken that relationship to the next level, with a high performance robot that opens the door for many new applications that have never been good candidates for automation.
