\n It offers lots of different \u201cattractions\u201d, including the\n \n Cit\u00e9 des Enfants\n <\/i>\n for children, a library, a\n \n Cit\u00e9 des M\u00e9tiers\n <\/i>\n for professionals, an aquarium and a planetarium.\n <\/p>\n \n \n
\n Universcience wanted the\n \n Pepper robot by Softbank Robotics\n <\/b>\n to join their team in order to\n \n welcome their visitors\n <\/b>\n .\n <\/p>\n \n \n
\n \n And it\u2019s true \u2013 who better than a friendly robot to greet and guide newcomers at the heart of this futuristic city?\n <\/b>\n <\/p>\n \n \n
\n So they asked\n \n \n G\u00e9n\u00e9ration Robots\n <\/b>\n <\/a>\n to\n \n create a receptionist behaviour for their Pepper robot\n <\/b>\n , to be inaugurated at their 2016 Science Festival.\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n <\/p>\n \n \n \n Pepper would stand at the entrance to the\n \n Cit\u00e9 des Sciences et de l\u2019Industrie\n <\/i>\n , just next to the ticket office.\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n Her job would be to\n \n guide the user\n <\/b>\n to the parts of the city open to visitors (the G\u00e9ode, the library, the\n \n Cit\u00e9 des Enfants\n <\/i>\n ),\n \n provide information\n <\/b>\n on the different available services (restaurants, cloakroom), and\n \n propose activities\n <\/b>\n and games depending on the user’s age (Pepper likes to play!).\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n Pepper took up her new position at the\n \n Cit\u00e9 des Sciences et de l\u2019Industrie\n <\/i>\n \n at the launch of the Science Festival on 7 October 2016\n <\/b>\n . She has now landed a permanent contract, so will hold her position for as long as she is able!\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n <\/p>\n \n \n \n \n The Pepper robot, programmed by G\u00e9n\u00e9ration Robots, awaits you at the\n <\/b>\n \n \n Cit\u00e9 des Sciences\n <\/i>\n <\/b>\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n The\n \n main challenge\n <\/b>\n we came up against when working on this mission involved\n \n creating an app that was as fluid as possible\n <\/b>\n . Pepper likes to talk, she has to encourage those she\u2019s communicating with to interact a great deal, either orally or using the different buttons on her tablet, in order to obtain the required information.\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n So we had to ensure visitors could\n \n find the information they needed as quickly as possible\n <\/b>\n , to prevent them from getting bored and leaving disappointed with their user experience.\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n The\n \n second challenge\n <\/b>\n (this one more obvious to the end user) involved offering our customer the possibility to easily\n \n change the dialogue\n <\/b>\n of the Pepper robot, without having to ask G\u00e9n\u00e9ration Robots.\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n \n This is because the\n <\/b>\n \n \n Cit\u00e9 des Sciences et de l\u2019Industrie\n <\/i>\n <\/b>\n \n is a place that is constantly evolving. There are always new exhibitions being created, new attractions to see and scientific events to attend!\n <\/b>\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n We overcame the problem of app fluidity by integrating an\n \n \u201cInterrupt dialogue\u201d function\n <\/b>\n into the Pepper robot. This new functionality allows users to continue browsing Pepper\u2019s tablet before she reaches the end of her speech.\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n It is a feature that has proved\n \n particularly useful with children\n <\/b>\n , who tend not to pay much attention to what Pepper is saying, and prefer to look at her tablet and click quickly on the different navigational buttons.\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n The \u201cInterrupt dialogue\u00a0\u00bb function\n \n offers visitors the possibility to access the desired information very quickly\n <\/b>\n (although it means they don\u2019t enter into a real discussion with the Pepper robot, which is a shame). App fluidity was particularly important because it would be used by children born with and used to using these new technologies!\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n We also created a variety of movements and gestures typical of receptionists (for example to indicate the location of the cloakroom or shop), in order to\n \n give visitors the even greater impression that they are interacting with an intelligent being\n <\/b>\n .\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n This involved making a\n \n back-office improvement\n <\/b>\n to the robot, allowing its owner to\n \n easily and quickly change the dialogue\n <\/b>\n .\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n \n By offering customers more freedom, G\u00e9n\u00e9ration Robots gives them full ownership of their robot and allows them to develop their solution.\n <\/b>\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n We designed a website that serves as a user interface. This site, connected to Pepper, displays everything that Pepper says and allows it to be edited. So all you have to do is alter the dialogue using the interface, relaunch the app, and you\u2019re done!\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n <\/p>\n \n \n \n This web interface also allows you to\n \n change the images that Pepper displays on her tablet\n <\/b>\n and includes in her dialogue (for example\n \n exclusive photos\n <\/b>\n of a new exhibition that is being set up, or a\n \n QR code\n <\/b>\n that will give those who scan it a discount or gift!).\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n <\/p>\n \n \n \n The customer can also configure the length of time these images are shown, enable\/disable speech recognition, and so on.\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n \n The Pepper robot had the desired effect!\n <\/b>\n As expected, lots of children (and adults!) quickly gathered to talk and interact with her. Children are very curious, and big fans of robots! Some also wanted to touch her to see what she was made of.\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n The members of the Universcience team were thrilled with their new colleague and with everyone\u2019s enthusiasm for the\n \n \n Pepper robot\n <\/b>\n <\/a>\n \n , created by Softbank Robotics with a behaviour developed by our\n <\/b>\n \n \n GR Lab\n <\/b>\n <\/a>\n .\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n Media coverage was very satisfying (see some of the articles below), and a Secretary of State (\n \n Thierry Mangon\n <\/b>\n ) also spent some time with Pepper! There has been\n \n a lot of activity on the social networks\n <\/b>\n surrounding Pepper’s arrival at the\n \n Cit\u00e9 des Sciences et de l\u2019Industrie\n <\/i>\n , especially on\n \n Twitter\n <\/b>\n .\n <\/p>\n \n \n \n We saw just\n \n how important the tablet is\n <\/b>\n , because it\u2019s generally what users choose to interact with Pepper \u2013 visitors\n \n do not necessarily feel comfortable approaching and talking to a robot!\n <\/b>\n It\u2019s therefore extremely important not to overlook this point, and to make sure it\u2019s attractive.
