They are programmable, networkable, and <strong> the actuator\u2019s status can be read and monitored <\/strong> by means of a data packet stream. They are known for their <strong> durability <\/strong> and quality, and are used worldwide in lots of complex robotics projects.<\/p>\n<p>The Dynamixel range is so huge that it\u2019s not always easy finding your way around. In this article, we\u2019ll help you choose the right servo for your project.<\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s new at Dynamixel?<\/h2>\n<h3><strong> More refined large servos <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The XL range has extended its family with the XL330, which comes in two versions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>XL330-M288-T<\/li>\n<li>XL330-M077-T<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The XL330-M288-T offers a rotational speed of <strong> 100 revolutions per minute <\/strong> and a <strong> stall torque of 0.52 <\/strong> , while the XL330-M077-T is faster at <strong> 363 revolutions per minute <\/strong> but has a lower stall torque ( <strong> 0.22 <\/strong> ).<\/p>\n<p>Its main advantage remains its size, because it\u2019s the <strong> smallest <\/strong> servo in the range. Measuring just 20 x 34 x 26, it easily dethrones the XL-320 (24 x 36 x 27).<\/p>\n<h3>Robots at sea<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong> waterproof <\/strong> XW series rounds out this range of robotics servos. There are 2 versions, the XW540-T260-R and the XW540-T140-R, <strong> one is fast and the other powerful <\/strong> . They\u2019re ideal for use in aquatic environments and in high-humidity laboratory conditions.<\/p>\n<h2>How do I choose the right servo?<\/h2>\n<p>Here we look at a concrete use case with the <strong> <a class=\"catalogue\" title=\"Poppy humanoid robot\" href=\"\/en\/312-poppy-humanoid-robot\"> Poppy humanoid <\/a> <\/strong> robot, which is built using 3 different servo motors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dynamixel MX-28AT servo<\/li>\n<li>Dynamixel MX-64AT servo<\/li>\n<li>Dynamixel AX-12A servo<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <strong> Dynamixel AX-12A servo motor <\/strong> is the <strong> smallest <\/strong> in the AX series. It\u2019s very effective for little actions involving <strong> not much weight <\/strong> . It\u2019s used on the Poppy robot for <strong> wrist <\/strong> mobility.<\/p>\n<p>The 2 other servo motors are from the <strong> MX range <\/strong> and are <strong> more powerful <\/strong> . MX-64AT servos are used for the <strong> pelvis <\/strong> and at the base of the <strong> legs <\/strong> . They allow the robot\u2019s heaviest parts to move. <strong> MX-28AT <\/strong> servos have been chosen for the rest of the robot for mobility ( <strong> medium weight, medium power <\/strong> ).<\/p>\n<h2>Which series should I choose?<\/h2>\n<p>There are <strong> 7 different series of Dynamixel servos <\/strong> : AX, MX, XC, XH, XL, XM and XW.<\/p>\n<p>You must take several criteria into consideration when choosing your servos:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Operating voltage<\/li>\n<li>Stall torque<\/li>\n<li>Etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>XW series<\/h3>\n<p>The servos in the <strong> <a class=\"catalogue\" title=\"Dynamixel XW series\" href=\"\/en\/525-dynamixel-serie-xw\"> XW series <\/a> <\/strong> can be easily isolated. They are waterproof. It\u2019s their most important feature. They can be used for mechanical engineering, in laboratories and in wet environments.<\/p>\n<h3>AX series<\/h3>\n<p>The <a class=\"catalogue\" title=\"Dynamixel AX series\" href=\"\/en\/255-dynamixel-ax-series\"> <strong> AX series <\/strong> <\/a> works with an input voltage of 9 to 12V. AX servos are the brand\u2019s entry-level servos and they use the TTL protocol.<\/p>\n<p>We recommend them for your robots\u2019 non-essential mechanical functions. They\u2019re ideal for <strong> learning robotics <\/strong> , light <strong> prototyping <\/strong> and <strong> wheel motorisation <\/strong> . The manufacturer Trossen Robotics uses them in robot arms for example.<\/p>\n<h3>MX series<\/h3>\n<p>The <a class=\"catalogue\" title=\"Dynamixel MX series\" href=\"\/en\/256-dynamixel-mx-series\"> <strong> MX series <\/strong> <\/a> is the next level up from the AX series. It offers more advanced features, such as more precise position control, PID correction (less backlash), 360\u00b0 position control and fast communication, making them particularly powerful components.<\/p>\n<p>They are more powerful and robust and offer better control of fast and precise movements.<\/p>\n<h3>XL series<\/h3>\n<p>The <a class=\"catalogue\" title=\"Dynamixel XL series\" href=\"\/en\/482-dynamixel-xl-serie\"> <strong> XL series <\/strong> <\/a> is the family of small servo motors. They\u2019re used a lot in the field of education and for small prototyping.<\/p>\n<h3>XM and XH series<\/h3>\n<p>The <a class=\"catalogue\" title=\"Dynamixel XM series\" href=\"\/en\/461-dynamixel-xm-serie\"> <strong> XM <\/strong> <\/a> and <a class=\"catalogue\" title=\"Dynamixel XH series\" href=\"\/en\/462-dynamixel-xh-serie\"> <strong> XH <\/strong> <\/a> series offer significant advantages in terms of torque, speed, position and even PWM control!<\/p>\n<p>The XH series is of a slightly higher quality (Maxon motor). They have a lower maximum speed and torque than the XM servos, but are more durable and energy efficient.<\/p>\n<h2>Dynamixel-P: The Professional Range<\/h2>\n<p>The new range of professional servomotors from Robotis, called <a class=\"catalogue\" title=\"Dynamixel XM series\" href=\"\/en\/216-dynamixel-p-servomotors\"> Dynamixel-P <\/a> , replaces the old Dynamixel Pro+ models (formerly Dynamixel Pro). This second generation of servomotors was designed to significantly improve the performance of Dynamixel servomotors, offering high precision movement and fast response times.
