This device can be mounted on a micro metal gearmotor to measure direction and speed of the rotation. An encoder is very useful in robotics to measure movements (odometry).
This quadrature encoder uses two reflectance infrared sensors. The encoder is calibrated to be used with a voltage between 4.5 and 5.5V but can be recalibrated to be used at 3.3V.
With 12 teeth on the wheel, this device as a resolution of 48 counts per revolution, which corresponds to a linear resolution of 3mm.
