Turn your Intel® Edison into an inertial measurement unit with the SparkFun Block 9 DOF!

The SparkFun Block 9 DOF works a bit like a shield for your Intel® Edison, which can then log navigation-related data (pitch, roll, speed, etc.). To do so, you simply need to plug your Intel® Edison platform into the block’s 70-pin connector.

The SparkFun Block for Intel® Edison 9 DOF uses the LSM9DS0 inertial measurement unit (IMU) and combines:

  • 1 x 3-axis accelerometer
  • 1 x 3-axis gyroscope
  • 1 x 3-axis magnetometer
  • That makes 9 degrees of freedom, as its name suggests!

 

By default, the block communicates with your Intel® Edison board through the I2C bus (in standard mode at 100 kHz or in fast mode at 400 kHz), but it can also be configured to use the SPI bus (available in standard mode only).

Each instrument in the LSM9DS0 IMU supports a broad measuring range:

  • Accelerometer: ± 2, 4, 6, 8 or 16 g
  • Gyroscope: ± 245, 500 and 2000 °/s
  • Magnetometer: ± 2, 4, 8 or 12 gauss

 

SparkFun Block 9 DOF for Intel® Edison: add a new string to your Intel® Edison bow

Following on from the release of the Intel® Edison board in autumn 2014, SparkFun has come up with the brilliant idea of creating a set of blocks allowing you to develop specific applications with Intel® Edison, handle new data or simply power the board.

In total, 5 different categories of blocks are available: power supply, communication, input, output and special functions.

The SparkFun Block 9 DOF for Intel® Edison is an “input” block in the sense that it provides your Intel® Edison platform with data, in this case on an object’s movement.

You can therefore use it to create a mobile robot incorporating the Internet of Things technology.
