SparkFun BLE Mate 2: the Bluetooth 4.0 breakout board
The Sparkfun BLE Mate 2 is a breakout board fitted with the BC118 Bluetooth BLE 4.0 module. It offers a 6-pin header compatible not only with the Arduino Pro et Arduino Pro Mini boards developed by SparkFun, but also with SparkFun’s FTDI Basic development board.
The SparkFun BLE Mate 2 has built-in level translation, so it can be used with boards supplying a voltage of more than the 3.3 V.
The integrated BC118 Bluetooth module is capable of transmitting data via UART at 9600 bps (default) with a frequency band of 2402 MHz to 2480 MHz. As the name implies, it is a Bluetooth low energy (BLE) board, so it has a very low average power consumption (16 mA).
Please note that the BLE Mate 2 only supports Bluetooth 4.0; it won’t connect to Bluetooth 2.0 devices. It’s also worth noting that connecting to Bluetooth modules other than the BC118 will be much harder.
BLE Mate 2, Bluetooth Mate Silver and Bluetooth Mate Gold
The BLE Mate 2 breakout board’s architecture is very close to that of the 2 other development boards by SparkFun, the Gold and Silver Bluetooth Mates.
They function in a very similar way, but with one difference: the Gold and Silver boards enable a Bluetooth 2.0 connection, whereas the BLE Mate 2 supports only certified Bluetooth 4.0 low energy connections.
The BLE standard offers the same rate of data transmission as classic Bluetooth, while consuming 10 times less power, which makes it extremely useful for creating small connected objects requiring low energy consumption.
