How does the pulse and oxygen in blood sensor for e-health platform work?

The measurements taken by the Pulse and Oxygen in Blood (also called oxygen saturation) Sensor are essential biometric indicators when monitoring a patient, in particular for everything relating to vital organ oxygenation. By measuring oxygen saturation, we can calculate the amount of oxygen dissolved in arterial blood, and carried by haemoglobin. The measurement is taken by evaluating the absorption spectra of oxyhaemoglobin and deoxyhaemoglobin. These 2 absorption coefficients are revealed by 2 different wavelengths in the light spectrum, at 660 and 940 nm. Haemoglobin absorbs the waves of the light spectrum differently depending on whether it’s oxygenated or not.

The Pulse and Oxygen in Blood Sensor for E-Health Platform is designed especially for electronics researchers, teachers, designers and creators wishing to experiment with the creation of a medical kit including a certain amount of biometric data. In no case is it a medical tool to be recommended for monitoring a patient in a critical condition.

Using the pulse and oxygen in blood sensor for e-health platform

The Pulse and Oxygen in Blood Sensor is one of the 10 sensors found in the e-Health Sensor Platform kit created by Cooking Hacks, which includes all the biometric sensors required for monitoring various vital signs. Arduino and Raspberry Pi compatible, it can also be used to create a DIY medical kit, along with various other sensors such as the:

To make life simpler, you can also purchase the e-Health Sensor Shield, which will allow you to easily connect your oxygen saturation sensor to your programming board.
