Robotic kit : software
The Lego Mindstorms NXT V2 robotic kit contains a graphical programming software named NXT-G, based on the professional programming software Labview. NXT-G is compatible with PC and Mac. This software does not require strong knowledge of programming because the programming is done graphically using drag and drop of functional blocks.
A strength of Lego Mindstorms NXT is that several programming environments exist, some of them are free. Some examples are Labview, Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio (based on Microsoft Visual Studio, this programming environment allows the creation of complex programs using C#), Lejos (using Java) or RobotC (using C).
Sensors included in the Lego Mindstorms NXT kit
The ultrasonic sonar sensor allows the Lego Mindstorms NXT robot to detect obstacles and to measure distances.
The color sensor is able to distinguish colors. This sensor can be used as a light sensor to measure light intensity (to create behaviors where the robot run away light or to build a line follower)
Last but not least, the contact sensors (also name touch sensors) are triggered when a contact is made.
The Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0 intelligent brick
It is the real brain of the robot. This brick connects to the PC using either USB or Bluetooth (USB cable is included). This is possible to configure a PDA, a cell phone or a joystick to control remotely the robot. The NXT intelligent brick is powered by 6x LR 6 batteries (not included).
