Overview of the Pololu USB-to-serial adapter
With the Pololu USB-to-serial adapter, you don't need to use a RS232 that in all cases you can't connect to your computer to send and receive data from you microcontroller. You only have to plug it in a USB port, install the drivers (available for Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8, Linux and MacOS X) and it will be seen as a standard serial port by your computer.
The Pololu USB-to-serial converter work with a 3.3V voltage but are tolerant to 5V voltages. It is therefore possible to plug directly the outputs of the microcontrollers on the convertisser's pins. In most appllication, you will only need the TX, RX and GND pins, but all other pins are available if you need handshaking to establish the communication.
