USB/Serial converter FTDI basic board (3.3V/5V)

This FTDI basic board is a USB / Serial converter FTDI FT232RL. The pinout of this board matches the FTDI cable allowing to work with official and compatible Arduino boards. The main difference of this board is that it has the DTR pin opposed to the RTS pin of the FTDI cable. The DTR pin allows an automatic reset of the Arduino board when a new program (sketch) is downloaded, thus avoiding to press the reset button. This USB / FTDI Basic Series automatically reset any Arduino board that has the reset pin connected to a 6-pin connector.

Pines marked BLK and GRN correspond to the colored wires on the FTDI cable. The black wire on the FTDI cable is GND, while green is DTR. Use the BLK and GRN pins to align the FTDI basic board with your Arduino board.

FTDI Basic Breakout

There are advantages and disadvantages to working with the FTDI cable rather than the FTDI basic board. FTDI basic board has TX and RX LEDs that allow you to view the serial traffic. For its part, the FTDI cable is better protected than the basic board. However, it is less easy to embed the cable on a robot. Finally, the basic board uses DTR to perform a hardware reset while the cable uses an RTS signal.

FTDI basic board was designed to reduce the cost of developing a solution based on Arduino and to improve ease of use.

Output 3.3 / 5 V is switchable by jumper.
