The backlight 16x2 LCD screen is a liquid crystal screen allowing you to display numerous characters. It uses the very common HD44780 interface. You will find usage example in the Pololu ARV library.
Here is a list of the pins of the backlight 16x2 LCD screen:
|1||Vss||masse (0 V)|
|2||Vdd||5V logic supply voltage|
|4||RS||H/L register selection|
|5||R/W||H/L read/write signal|
|6||E||H/L enable signal|
|7-14||DB0 – DB7||H/L data bus for 4 or 8 bits mode|
|15||A (LED+)||backlight anode|
|16||K (LED-)||backlight cathode|
The address of the first character of the top line is 0x00, the one of the last character of the top line is 0x0F. The address of the first character of the bottom line is 0x40, the one of the last character of the bottom line is 0x4F.
A potentiometer with output connected to Vo will allow you to adjsut contrast.
The backlight is composed by leds in series. You can therefore adjust the backlight intensity by modifying the voltage between A and K (but stay above the 4.2V needed to activate the leds. Advised current is 120mA) by adding a Rlimit resistor corresponding to the under calculation or with a PWM created by a microcontroller.
Rlimit = (Vbacklight - 4.2V)/(0.12A)
