A wheeled quadruped combining obstacle negotiation and efficient mobility on rolling surfaces

The Unitree A2-W builds on the mechanical base of the A2 and adapts it to a mobility-oriented wheel-leg configuration. The goal is to provide a platform that can switch efficiently between progress on difficult terrain (steps, slopes, obstacles) and faster, more efficient travel on rolling surfaces.

Locomotion relies on 12 joint motors and an architecture designed for intensive use: dual encoders per joint and industrial crossed roller bearings for precision and load handling. The robot can support up to 100 kg as a standing load and around 20–25 kg during continuous walking, with a slope capability up to 45°.

For perception and navigation, the A2-W integrates 1 LiDAR and an HD camera. Interfaces and connectivity (Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, Ethernet, USB 3.0 Type-C, CAN/RS485) make it easier to integrate sensors, external modules, and control systems. OTA updates and support for secondary development help adapt the platform to specific scenarios.

Two variants are available: A2-W Standard and A2-W Pro. The A2-W Pro notably adds a second LiDAR, optional GPS/4G, SLAM capabilities (mapping and autonomous navigation), and enhanced environmental protection (up to IP56–IP67).

The dual-battery power system (hot-swappable) is intended for extended operation: up to about 5 hours and 20 km without load, and about 3 hours / 12.5 km with a 25 kg payload.

Use cases: mobile inspection, equipment transport, and data collection in mixed environments

The Unitree A2-W is intended for teams that need a stable mobile base for sensors and payloads, with a rolling mode useful on large sites and an obstacle negotiation mode for difficult areas.

  • Industrial inspection: patrols, equipment monitoring, movement between areas (workshops, corridors, ramps) and step negotiation.
  • Outdoor inspection: movement on rough terrain, slopes, obstacles, with visual and 3D acquisition via LiDAR + HD camera.
  • Logistics and payload transport: moving equipment (up to 20–25 kg during continuous walking), support for on-site operations.
  • Data collection: point cloud recording, HD video, repeatable routes over long distances.
  • R&D and prototyping: a platform for locomotion testing (wheels/legs), perception, control, and integration via CAN/RS485/Ethernet.
  • Module integration: adding GPS, 4G, or wireless vector follow (options) depending on field needs.
