Arduino the open-source electronics platform
Arduino was at the start a project for students from the Interaction Design Ivrea in Italy. Based around a single-board microcontroller, it is commonly used as an affordable and simple way for students, professionals and now hobbyists to make devices interacting with their environment using sensors and servomotors.
It revolves around an IDE (integrated development environment) where users can write programs for Arduino using C or C++. Arduino boards can be purchased on their own, in kits and now part of robotic kits!
