Crazyflie 2.1+: open-source development micro drone for education and research

The Crazyflie 2.1+ is a fully open-source flying development platform that fits in the palm of your hand and weighs only 29 g. Compact and robust, it is intended for users who want to experiment, prototype and test flight algorithms or embedded applications on a micro drone.

Main advantages of the Crazyflie 2.1+

  • Ultra-compact format (29 g), easy to carry and to use indoors.
  • Open-source platform suitable for development, experimentation and teaching.
  • Low-latency, long-range radio combined with Bluetooth LE for flexible control.
  • Improved battery and propellers offering up to around 15 % better flight performance compared with the previous Crazyflie 2.X platform.
  • Robust design, simple to assemble and requiring no soldering.
  • Extensive ecosystem of expansion decks (add-on boards) with automatic detection.
  • Platform suited for education, research and drone swarms (swarming).

Connectivity and control

The Crazyflie 2.1+ combines a long-range, low-latency radio with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). You can:

  • Control the drone from an iOS/Android smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth LE using the dedicated app.
  • Use a computer together with a Crazyradio 2.0 to display real-time data and fly with a game controller.
  • Fly from Windows, macOS or Linux using the Crazyradio, Crazyradio PA or Crazyradio 2.0 USB dongles.

Architecture and advanced features

  • Dual-MCU architecture with a dedicated SoC for radio and power management, suitable for advanced applications.
  • Wireless firmware updates, useful for quickly testing new developments.
  • On-board charging via a standard micro-USB connector.
  • Real-time logging and parameter tuning: logging, graphical visualization and variable adjustment from a computer.
  • Compatibility with expansion decks while keeping access to measurement and configuration functions in real time.

Typical use cases

  • Educational projects in control, embedded systems and mobile robotics.
  • Research work in navigation, state estimation, control or multi-robot cooperation.
  • Experiments in swarming (drone swarms) and collaborative behaviours.
  • Test platform for flight algorithms or specific application development.
