VL53L0X TOF: a long range, high-precision ToF laser distance sensor
The VL53L0X distance sensor is a ToF distance sensor that uses LiDAR technology. A laser beam measures the distance between its source and the object by calculating the time it takes for light to travel. As a result, distance is measured much more accurately (to within the nearest mm), despite the detection cone being much narrower than that of an ultrasonic sensor. In short, this sensor has a formidable view of any object that comes straight at it, from a distance of 1.2 m to 30 mm by default!
The board also includes a linear voltage regulator that provides the 2.8V voltage required by the VL53L0X. The controller output is available on the VDD pin and can supply up to 150 mA to external devices. The board comes with its SMD components, including the VL53L0X.
An ideal ToF distance sensor for mobile robotics
The VL53L0X is a particularly good choice for mounting on a robot equipped with a pan/tilt system, or on a mobile robot capable of moving in all directions. The sensor will allow it to easily locate obstacles, in order to avoid, move or stop them.
